New Instructor Teaching Orientation

This event is for anyone who is newly hired to teach in the College of IST. Meet the Learning Design team, discover resources for preparing content for your assigned courses, and gain the top 10 ideas for engaging students (pulled from colleagues in IST and best practices in higher education).
Technology Tools for Teaching
Date: Monday, August 17
Time: 6:00 pm – 8 pm, EST
This session introduces new instructors to Canvas and Zoom. Learn the standard Canvas structure for College of IST courses; how to set up your gradebook; and tips for using Zoom polls, breakout rooms, and whiteboards.
Teaching Community Seminars

Seminars are offered three times each semester over the lunch hour for instructors to discuss teaching topics of interest, such as modern start-up technologies, teaching with virtual hands-on labs, student experiences on teams, best practices for high quality exam items, and more. Watch for a save-the-date email at the start of each semester or check the seminar webpage. You can offer a discussion topic by emailing your idea to email@example.com.
Informal Teaching Conversations
Dates & Times: TBD, based on new instructor interest
Informal teaching conversations occur over the lunch hour about every three weeks, based on the schedules of interested new instructors. Topics are determined by those who attend. Sessions provide opportunities for reflection on teaching and Q&A with learning designers.
Online Teaching and Learning Meetings
Dates: 4th Friday of the month
Faculty teaching online courses for the College of IST are invited to attend monthly meetings to discuss teaching online. Topics (such as creating grading rubrics to establish expectations in online courses, working with asynchronous student teams, and strategies for ensuring academic integrity) are announced the week before each session.
Date: TBD, weekly in February
Each spring semester, instructors are invited to participate in a month-long book club, usually during the month of February. Past books include Teach Your Students How to Learn by Saundra Yancy McGuire, Small Teaching by James M. Lang, and Mindset by Carol Dweck. Look for email announcements in December and January.
